Services Sector Jobs Lead Pakistan Employment After New Census

In a major restructuring drive, the federal government has abolished 54,000 posts across ministries and departments, aiming to save Rs. 56 billion annually under its right-sizing initiative. The move is part of a broader effort to streamline bureaucracy, improve efficiency, and ensure fiscal discipline amid mounting financial pressures.

According to officials from the Right-Sizing Committee, the rationalization process has so far covered 39 ministries and 300 departments, with recommendations for 301 of 441 total departments already approved by the Federal Cabinet. Implementation of the approved reforms is currently underway, while recommendations for 19 additional departments under nine ministries have been sent for final approval.

A senior official stated,

“This exercise is designed to align government operations with modern administrative needs while ensuring prudent use of public funds.”

As part of the restructuring, several organizations have been merged or dissolved, including the Utility Stores Corporation and Pakistan Public Works Department (Pak PWD). The Ministry of Kashmir Affairs has been merged with SAFRON, while the Ministries of Defence and Aviation have also been consolidated to remove overlapping functions and enhance coordination.

The Prime Minister has also directed a performance review of all regulatory authorities and training institutions, with plans to merge multiple entities into a few national-level institutions to improve resource utilization and training quality.

The right-sizing initiative reflects the government’s push toward a leaner and more efficient governance structure, aligning fiscal reforms with administrative modernization.
