The federal cabinet has cleared a Rs 10.8 billion financial relief package to support electricity consumers in regions devastated by this year’s monsoon floods. The measure comes as thousands of families in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continue to struggle to rebuild their homes, businesses, and livelihoods.
Domestic consumers in officially declared flood-hit areas will see their August 2025 bills waived entirely. Relative authorities will manage refunds for those who have already made payments. Meanwhile, industrial, commercial, and agricultural consumers will benefit from a seven-month deferral plan. The deferral plan will spread repayments over a period of 6 months, from December 2025 to June 2026.
To fund the relief, the government has already transferred Rs 10.8 billion to the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA-G), with Rs 10.4 billion earmarked for domestic waivers and Rs 464 million to manage deferred payments from other sectors.
Federal Minister for Energy Awais Leghari said the step was essential for easing the financial burden on communities: “This initiative ensures that flood-affected families do not have to worry about paying electricity bills at a time when they are already struggling to recover.”
Echoing this, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar described the package as part of broader rehabilitation efforts: “The government is committed to standing by citizens in difficult times, and this decision reflects our priority to provide immediate relief while reconstruction continues.”
With electricity bills often ranking among the highest recurring expenses for households, commoners are viewing the cabinet’s move as a critical measure to give affected families and businesses the breathing space they need as recovery efforts intensify.
