Govt Expands Laptop Scheme to More Universities

ISLAMABAD: In a significant move to enhance digital education access, the National Assembly’s Special Committee on Integrating Women into the National Mainstream has decided to expand the government’s laptop scheme to the students of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) and Virtual University (VU). The decision was made during a committee meeting chaired by Nafisa Shah.
During the briefing, Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed provided key insights into Pakistan’s university enrollment trends. He noted that in 2002, when HEC was established, 37% of university students were female. As of 2025, female enrollment has increased to 48%, while male students constitute 52%. This upward trend showcases Pakistan’s progress in gender inclusion in higher education, reinforcing the need for further digital access initiatives.
Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed also emphasized that universities have been advised to implement stricter anti-harassment policies to ensure a safe learning environment. Addressing the recent harassment scandal at Islamia University Bahawalpur, he clarified that the issue was serious but not as exaggerated as portrayed on social media. A detailed inquiry report was submitted, leading to job dismissals and arrests. Investigations are ongoing, with several individuals still facing legal consequences.
In another key development, Federal Ministry of Education Secretary Mohiuddin Wani highlighted the successful implementation of an AI-based paper generation system in Islamabad. This initiative aims to enhance exam security by minimizing human interference, improve efficiency in test creation and evaluation, and ensure fairness in the assessment process.
