Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif revealed new austerity steps on Monday, aiming to save fuel and manage rising energy costs caused by international tensions in the Middle East.
Speaking to the nation, he explained that the government is introducing strict measures to reduce fuel consumption and ensure efficient use of resources across public and private sectors.
Earlier in the day, a high-level meeting was held with federal and provincial officials to discuss and finalize the proposed austerity policies for immediate nationwide implementation.
Reduced Working Hours and Remote Work
Fifty percent of employees in both public and private sectors will work from home, excluding essential services, as part of the measures to cut fuel use and operational costs.
Government offices will operate only four days a week, with banks being exempted, in an effort to further reduce utility consumption and ensure sustainable management of public resources.
Immediate School Closures
All schools across the country will close for two weeks starting this week to save electricity and limit fuel consumption, the Prime Minister said.
Educational institutions will ensure online classes continue, enabling students to maintain academic schedules.
Travel and Vehicle Restrictions
Government departments will reduce fuel allocations for official vehicles by 50% over the next two months, while 60% of departmental vehicles will remain off the road during the same period.
Officials are instructed to prioritize teleconferencing and online meetings over travel.
Salary Reductions and Welfare Contributions
Federal cabinet members, including ministers, advisers, and special assistants, will forgo their salaries for two months to show commitment and lead by example in implementing the national austerity measures.
Parliamentarians’ pay will be reduced by 25%; senior officials will donate two days’ salary; and all government departments must cut operational spending by 20%, banning new vehicles, furniture, and air conditioners.
Ban on Official Extravagances
Official dinners, Iftar gatherings, and seminars in hotels are prohibited; all such events must now be held in government premises to curb unnecessary spending during the austerity period.
Foreign trips by ministers, advisers, special assistants, governors, and government officials are restricted to those essential for national interest, preventing non-essential international travel and conserving resources.
Warnings Against Hoarding and Profiteering
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif warned against illegal profiteering, urging all provinces to take strict action against hoarders to protect consumers and stabilize prices of essential commodities nationwide.
He stressed that Pakistan requires unity and national solidarity now more than ever, emphasizing cooperation among citizens, government, and various alliances to overcome economic and energy challenges together.
