Speaking at official launch event of 5G, IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja said expanding internet access and improving spectrum availability could play a major role in strengthening Pakistan’s economy. Referring to global estimates by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), she noted that a 10% increase in broadband penetration can lead to around a 2% rise in GDP.
The minister said the government’s aim is to ensure that once more spectrum becomes available, connectivity can be expanded across the country. “The moment we have more spectrum, we will be able to make it available for more people in the country,” she said, adding that almost every sector of the economy now depends on reliable internet access.
According to the minister, the government expects 5G to generate nearly $10 billion in economic value for Pakistan in the coming years. She said key sectors expected to benefit from the technology include health-tech, agri-tech and fin-tech, where faster and more reliable connectivity can support innovation and new digital services.
Khawaja stressed that building these technology ecosystems requires both adequate spectrum and wider access to 5G networks, which are essential for achieving a broader digital transformation. She added that the government is also working to improve per-capita productivity through digital tools and connectivity.
The minister also referred to the government’s broader technology vision, saying Pakistan is targeting $25 billion in IT exports, a goal being pursued under initiatives directed by the prime minister.
