Green Line BRT Phase 2 Work Restarts After New Agreement

Karachi’s Green Line BRT is finally set to restart its halted second-phase construction, with officials confirming new stations and a revised plan aimed at speeding up completion. The decision comes after PIDCL representatives met Mayor Murtaza Wahab on Friday to resolve KMC’s concerns, clearing the way for immediate work on the stalled extension.

The background dispute began when KMC stopped construction in September, arguing that PIDCL had not obtained the mandatory NOC. Karachi’s municipal leadership stressed that all development within the city must follow local authority protocols. After weeks of negotiations, both sides have now agreed on a revised plan that ensures smoother coordination.

Under the updated design, the 1.8-kilometer extension from Numaish Chowrangi to Municipal Park will include three new stations, boosting commuter access along this key corridor. Officials said the extension will feature Traffic Signal Priority technology, a system designed to reduce BRT delays and improve travel times.

“Work is restarting immediately and will be completed within the approved timeline,” Mayor Wahab assured during the briefing, while PIDCL officials committed to finishing the remaining construction within one year.

The Green Line’s first phase already carries nearly 80,000 passengers every day, and ridership is expected to grow sharply once the expansion becomes operational. The official announcement on the construction restart is expected next week.
