Downloads of X’s separate Grok app declined significantly in recent months pointing to challenges for Elon Musk’s xAI project. Grok downloads fell nearly 60% to around 8.3 million in April.
However, the decline came from a peak of more than 20 million downloads in January 2026.
The January peak came amid Grok’s nudification trend when thousands of unauthorized sexually suggestive images were generated hourly. X took action to combat misuse by restricting some Grok functions to paying users only. Consequently, that restriction apparently shrunk audience interest though it aligns with xAI’s effort to monetize the project.
