HBO’s highly anticipated Harry Potter TV series finally has a firm release date. The reboot will premiere on Christmas Day 2026 across HBO and HBO Max. Notably, this arrives earlier than fans initially expected. The series was originally slated to debut sometime in 2027 instead.
The first season carries the title Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It adapts the first book in J.K. Rowling’s beloved series. The show aims to explore the Wizarding World more deeply than the films. Each season will spend far more time at Hogwarts than the movies allowed.
A completely new cast leads the ambitious adaptation. Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry Potter, chosen from over 30,000 auditioning actors. Arabella Stanton plays Hermione Granger, while Alastair Stout takes on Ron Weasley. An all-star supporting cast rounds things out considerably. John Lithgow portrays Dumbledore, Nick Frost plays Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu takes on Snape.
However, the marketing rollout has sharply divided the fandom. HBO revealed redesigned emblems for all four Hogwarts houses. The network unveiled them at a Back to Hogwarts event in Australia. Crucially, the timing aligned with September 1, the date the Hogwarts Express departs.
The new crests strip away the ornate, medieval look of the films. Instead, each house mascot sits inside a plain colored circle with floral flourishes. The line work appears far thinner and more stylized than before. Consequently, the reaction online was swift and largely unimpressed.

Fans clustered their objections around the same core complaint. Many felt the originals looked like proper heraldic coats of arms. One fan compared Ravenclaw’s new emblem to a “fire-breathing chicken.” Others called the designs “cheap,” “corporate,” or even AI-generated.

Interestingly, one change actually corrects a longstanding film-era error. Ravenclaw’s crest now features an eagle rather than a raven. In Rowling’s books, the house symbol has always been an eagle. Therefore, HBO’s redesign aligns more faithfully with the original novels.
The broader visual direction also leans notably darker throughout. Promotional material favors muted, moodier colors over saturated film tones. Even Harry’s lightning scar reportedly looks different this time. Despite the backlash, HBO envisions the project as a decade-long undertaking. Writing on the second season has already commenced.
