Pakistan’s Hyderabad Airport is set for a major upgrade aimed at allowing it to serve as an alternative airport for Karachi during emergencies and adverse weather conditions, according to sources in the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA).
Under the proposed plan, the airport’s runway will be extended from 7,000 feet to 11,500 feet, allowing it to accommodate larger aircraft, including Boeing 777s. Passenger facilities are also expected to be improved as part of the project.
The upgrade could position Hyderabad as a regional aviation hub and provide an alternative to Karachi, Nawabshah and Sukkur airports during emergencies. Passengers could potentially be transported by road to Karachi and other nearby cities when flights are diverted.
Sources said consultations may also be held with relevant stakeholders regarding the possible launch of regional domestic flights from Hyderabad.
The airport last handled a commercial passenger flight in 2013, when Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) operated services from Hyderabad.
