Google’s upcoming Android 17 update is set to redefine mobile gaming, introducing system-level tools that enhance performance and responsiveness. The update focuses on improved controller support, flexible customization, and new ways to play games across devices. For Xiaomi users, these changes could be amplified through HyperOS, potentially turning their phones into handheld gaming consoles.
Previous Android versions relied on fixed button layouts, typically modeled after Xbox-style controllers. Many gamers, however, wanted to remap buttons for comfort, habit, or accessibility. Until now, achieving this required third-party apps, complicated ADB commands, or in-game settings. Android 17 will change that with native controller remapping directly built into the system.
The update introduces a new permission, android. permission.CONTROLLER_REMAPPING, which ensures that only system-level apps can handle remapping. This will make the feature more stable and secure, eliminating the need for extra tools.
Google is also testing a dedicated gamepad management menu within Settings. Though not fully active, it already appears in beta builds. This new page will display all connected controllers in one place and allow users to customize buttons, switch layouts, and manage multiple gamepads more efficiently.
For Xiaomi, these updates align well with HyperOS features. Devices like the Xiaomi Pad lineup and Snapdragon-powered flagship phones already emphasize gaming. A unified controller menu will make these devices even more gamer-friendly.
One of Android 17’s most notable features is the virtual game controller. Acting like a physical gamepad, this software-based controller is fully recognized by games. It supports ABXY buttons, joysticks, triggers, D-pad inputs, analog movement, and axis-based controls. Players can even map touch controls to virtual gamepad inputs, making previously incompatible games playable with controller-like precision.
This technology already exists in ChromeOS and Google Play Games for PC, but Android 17 brings it to smartphones and tablets. Combined with Xiaomi’s HyperOS, it could elevate mobile gaming to a near-console experience.
While Android 17 is still months away, the improvements in controller remapping, virtual buttons, and touch-to-controller mapping promise a more responsive and versatile gaming experience. Future Xiaomi models, including Xiaomi 15 phones, new Xiaomi Pads, and gaming-focused devices, could fully leverage these enhancements. Cloud gaming, emulators, and console-style gameplay are expected to run smoother and more naturally.
