IESCO Makes AMI Meters Mandatory for Net Metering, Consumers to Bear Cost

Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has officially announced a new policy regarding net metering connections, making it mandatory for consumers to pay for Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters. The directive follows instructions from the Federal Minister for Energy and has been conveyed through IESCO’s Chief Executive Officer.

According to the notification issued on September 8, 2025, all new demand notices for net metering connections and distributed generation (DG) facilities will now include the cost of AMI meters. This policy will be strictly enforced across all field formations down to the sub-divisional level.

The decision aims to enhance monitoring and transparency in energy consumption and solar net metering, ensuring more efficient integration of renewable energy into the national grid. However, it also means an additional financial burden on consumers seeking net metering facilities.

In conclusion, while the installation of AMI meters is expected to improve accuracy and system reliability, consumers will now have to bear the upfront cost as part of their net metering connection charges.
