A viral image circulating on social media claiming that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has limited mobile phone tax reductions only to registered importers has been confirmed as fake, with no new clarification issued by PTA beyond the already announced official tax rates.
Recently, PTA officially revised mobile phone tax rates under the Device Identification, Registration, and Blocking System (DIRBS), and those updated rates were already reported by the media. However, a misleading letter began circulating online, creating confusion among consumers by falsely suggesting that tax relief does not apply to individual users.
The fabricated letter falsely states:
“The reduction in PTA tax applies only to legal importers and registered vendors. General consumers will continue to pay the same PTA tax on all devices.”
The letter carries PTA branding but does not originate from the authority.
There is no new clarification, notification, or directive from PTA supporting this claim. Officials have not issued any separate explanation restricting tax reductions to importers only. The only valid tax rates remain those already officially announced by PTA and notified through proper government channels.
