Islamabad’s public transport system has reached a major milestone as all 21 electric bus routes are now fully operational across the capital. The move, approved on the instructions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, aims to provide affordable, modern, and environmentally friendly transport to residents, with daily ridership already crossing 102,000 passenger.
The electric bus project was launched to reduce fuel dependency, cut urban pollution, and improve mobility in Islamabad. Over time, public demand for the service has increased due to low fares, better connectivity, and reliable schedules. The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has gradually expanded routes and supporting infrastructure to meet this growing demand.
The announcement was made during a high-level meeting chaired by CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa, where officials reviewed key development projects in the capital. Authorities confirmed that all 21 routes are now active, covering major residential and commercial areas.
An official noted, “Public response to the electric bus service has been very encouraging, with ridership showing consistent growth.”
The meeting also revealed that construction of electric bus depots at two locations is near completion, with overall work 97 percent finished and Site A fully completed. Alongside transport projects, progress was reviewed on Margalla Avenue’s linkage with the M-1 Motorway, as well as plans for a Convention, Expo and Exhibition Centre and a proposed luxury hotel in Islamabad.
With rising fuel costs and traffic congestion, the fully operational electric bus network is expected to ease commuting pressures, promote sustainable transport, and improve the overall quality of urban life in Islamabad.
