Islamabad International Airport just became the first aviation hub in Pakistan to offer 5G services. Today, April 2, 2026, marks a massive milestone for digital transformation in the country. Passengers can now access ultra-fast internet and advanced digital facilities.
Islamabad Airport: Upgrading Aviation Connectivity
The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) partnered with a private cellular company to launch this service. Consequently, travellers now experience seamless connectivity. PAA officials state that these modern digital solutions will drastically enhance the overall airport experience. Passengers are already using the high-speed network. Furthermore, this launch establishes new connectivity standards for aviation hubs. It effectively aligns Pakistan’s aviation infrastructure with global technological standards.
Jazz Spearheads the Urban Rollout
This airport upgrade follows a much larger nationwide push. Earlier, on March 19, telecom giants Jazz and Zong officially launched their 5G services across Pakistan. Initially, Jazz activated 5G at approximately 180 sites. This network covers Islamabad and all four provincial capitals: Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, and Quetta. Additionally, Jazz extended coverage to major urban centres like Rawalpindi, Multan, and Faisalabad. The company secured multiple spectrum bands during the recent auction, including 700 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2600 MHz, and 3500 MHz. Meanwhile, Jazz continues to expand and upgrade its existing nationwide 4G network.
Zong Accelerates Expansion
Zong is aggressively accelerating its own network rollout. The company announced the commercial launch of 5G services in more than 16 cities. Moreover, Zong plans to install over 1,000 5G sites by the end of 2026. The transformative potential of this technology is undeniable. During initial trials, Zong achieved speeds exceeding 1.4 Gbps.
Telecom officials strongly emphasize the broader impact of next-generation connectivity. Advanced networks powered by artificial intelligence will drastically improve digital services and overall user experience. Ultimately, 5G will play a critical role in driving the industrial and economic development of Pakistan.
