Islamabad is set to get its first dedicated pedestrian-only zone as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) begins transforming a section of Blue Area along Jinnah Avenue into a vehicle-free, family-friendly space. The Rs. 240 million project stretches from Savour Foods to Khyber Plaza, spanning approximately 800 metres, and aims to promote leisure, dining, and digital engagement.
The initiative comes amid growing demand for safe urban spaces where citizens can walk, shop, and dine without traffic concerns. Currently, the city’s only established food street, Melody Food Park, faces parking and maintenance challenges, highlighting the need for a well-planned pedestrian area.
CDA’s engineering wing has already begun civil works, and the zone will feature food outlets, entertainment screens, and digital installations at entry and exit points. Parking will be available in nearby multi-storey plazas with 950 spaces, plus 150 spots near Khyber Plaza and PIMS.
Member Engineering Syed Nafasat Raza stated,
“This is an ideal location for a food street and public recreation. Our goal is to complete the entire project, including lighting, within two months.”
CDA officials noted that consultations with Blue Area traders ensured commercial activity remains unaffected.
The Blue Area pedestrian zone will serve as a pilot project, potentially expanding to Jinnah Super Market and other hubs. Plans are also underway for Capital Street near Shakarparian, combining dining, art studios, and an expo hall to further enhance Islamabad’s urban experience.
