Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has directed authorities to complete the feasibility study for Islamabad’s proposed electric tram system within three months, signaling renewed momentum for the long-planned urban transit project.
The directive came during the inauguration of a new electric bus depot and charging stations at Zero Point, where officials briefed the minister on plans for the tram network. The Capital Development Authority has engaged National University of Sciences and Technology to conduct the study.
Proposed Routes
- Islamabad International Airport → Lake View Park
- Rawat → Lake View Park
The Lake View Park corridor is also envisioned as the starting point of the proposed Murree Glass Train project, creating an integrated tourism and transport link.
Officials noted that while the tram plan has been discussed for years without execution, the latest deadline indicates stronger intent to move forward, especially alongside other electric mobility initiatives in the capital.
Separately, the government is exploring revival of the Rawalpindi–Islamabad rail link between Margalla Railway Station and Saddar, aiming to offer a modern commuter option after a similar 1990s service failed due to low ridership.
