The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is working on a new time-based electronic parking system at seven locations in Islamabad to digitally monitor vehicle parking duration and charges.
CDA officials briefed the Senate Standing Committee on Interior about the project, saying work on the system is currently underway.
Under the proposed electronic parking system, the duration of each vehicle’s stay in designated parking areas will be recorded through a digital dashboard.
The system will allow the CDA to monitor parking duration and calculate applicable parking charges electronically. The initiative is aimed at improving parking management and making the collection of parking fees more transparent.
Senator Naseema Ehsan said a traffic management system similar to one introduced in Karachi had also been initiated in Islamabad. She highlighted the difficulties residents and visitors face while searching for parking spaces in the capital.
CDA Director General Enforcement Anum Fatima told the committee that the Blue Area parking plaza has been completed and is expected to help address parking problems in the area.
She said parking fees are being collected according to the CDA-approved layout plan. The authority is also using cashless payments and QR codes at its parking facilities.
Senator Abid Sher Ali questioned the CDA’s existing parking arrangements, pointing out that parking fees were still being collected on roads despite the completion of the Blue Area parking plaza.
He described the situation as contradictory and asked CDA officials to clarify parking arrangements in newly constructed plazas.
Sher Ali also proposed that new plazas should not receive a No Objection Certificate (NOC) unless they provide adequate underground parking facilities.
The proposed electronic parking system is expected to give the CDA greater control over parking operations while helping residents and visitors manage parking more efficiently across Islamabad.
