It Ministry Seeks Reversal Of Decision To Dissolve Nitb

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has urged the federal government to reconsider its decision to dissolve the National Information Technology Board (NITB). A formal request has been submitted for review, emphasizing the board’s vital role in Pakistan’s digital governance.

A spokesperson from the IT Ministry confirmed that NITB’s continued operation is crucial for managing over 100 digital platforms that facilitate services between government agencies, businesses, and citizens. The request challenges a decision by the Rightsizing Committee, which had earlier recommended dissolving NITB and shifting IT procurement responsibilities to a separate entity.

The Ministry argues that dismantling NITB could disrupt essential digital services, impacting efficiency and innovation. Established in 2014 through the merger of the Pakistan Computer Bureau and the Electronic Government Directorate, NITB has overseen over 500 digital projects. Its autonomy, granted in 2022, has allowed it to drive Pakistan’s digital transformation.

The Ministry’s appeal comes just weeks after the government extended the contract of NITB Director Imran Maqsood for another year. The federal government is expected to review the appeal, with stakeholders closely watching the outcome, given NITB’s central role in advancing Pakistan’s e-governance framework.
