Karachi has widened its rickshaw ban to 26 major roads, adding six more key routes to its existing restrictions in an effort to reduce worsening traffic congestion across Pakistan’s largest city.
The decision was announced by Karachi Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi after a formal recommendation by DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah. The order has been enforced under Section 144 of the CrPC, extending the earlier banissued on October 17, 2025 which restricted rickshaws on 20 major arteries.
Officials confirmed that the newly restricted routes include Shahrah-e-Faisal, II Chundrigar Road, Shahrah-e-Quaideen, Shershah Suri Road, Shaheed-e-Millat Road, Stadium Road, Rashid Minhas Road, Shahrah-e-Pakistan, University Road, Korangi Road, and several other high-traffic corridors.
Authorities said the move aims to
“improve traffic flow and reduce gridlock across the city’s busiest and most sensitive routes.”
The expansion comes as Karachi continues to face intense congestion and public frustration over daily traffic jams.
In addition to the rickshaw ban, the Sindh government has also placed a daytime ban on heavy vehicles and implemented a 30 km/h speed limit for HTVs to ease the pressure on main roads.
