The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has launched development projects worth over Rs 700 million to restore and upgrade the historic Old City area of the metropolis, with Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab laying the foundation stone on Sunday.
The projects aim to improve roads, sewerage systems, and public infrastructure in key commercial areas, including Jodia Bazaar, Bolton Market, Mithadar, and Kharadar. According to officials, the work is scheduled to be completed by June 30, 2026.
Out of the total allocation, Rs 595.6 million will be spent on road construction, paver blocks, and sewerage rehabilitation, while an additional Rs 100 million has been earmarked for the restoration of the historic Lea Market building, which is expected to be completed within 90 days.
The infrastructure plan includes the laying of 400,000 square feet of paver blocks, construction of 850,000 square feet of roads, and installation of more than 14,000 feet of new sewerage lines across the Old City’s major markets.
Speaking to the media, Mayor Wahab said that 2026 has been declared the year of completion for development projects, adding that upgrading the Old City with modern urban facilities is a top priority for the KMC. He stressed that all work would be carried out transparently and with coordination among civic agencies to prevent damage to newly built roads.
The mayor also highlighted the importance of cooperation from local traders and residents, stating that sustainable improvement in the Old City would only be possible through joint efforts by the government, administration, and business community.
