Karachi Opens 100 Community Schools for Slum Children
Karachi is set to witness a major educational initiative as the Directorate General of Basic Education Community Schools (BECS), under the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, will inaugurate 100 new community (non-formal) schools on Saturday, September 13. The project is designed to bring out-of-school children into classrooms and provide free education in the most deprived neighborhoods of the city.
This move comes in response to the alarming number of children in Karachi’s slum settlements who remain out of school due to poverty and lack of access. Federal Education Minister Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqi, who will inaugurate the ceremony at the Liaquat Memorial Library Auditorium, said the initiative is about “opening doors to hope” for marginalized families.

The inauguration ceremony will be attended by senior officials, including the Federal Secretary for Education, while students will showcase performances and newly appointed teachers will receive appointment letters.
This initiative is not only expected to reduce the number of out-of-school children in Karachi but also serve as a model for addressing educational disparity nationwide.
Will Karachi’s new community schools pave the way for a nationwide movement to end educational inequality?
