KARACHI: The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has successfully recovered its official X (formerly Twitter) account after it was compromised.
The port authority had earlier reported that its account was hacked and had attributed the cyber intrusion to India.
In a statement released on X shortly after regaining control, KPT reiterated its previous assertion, stating that its “‘official Twitter account has been hacked by India.'”
The port trust had used the same platform earlier to inform the public about the hacking and to deny any Indian control or involvement in its operations, directly addressing potential misinformation stemming from the compromised account.
While KPT has announced the recovery of its X account, the duration for which it remained under unauthorized control was not immediately specified in the latest update. The incident underscores the increasing vulnerability of official social media accounts to cyberattacks, particularly those belonging to critical infrastructure organizations.
The accusation against India adds a layer of geopolitical sensitivity to the incident, occurring amidst existing regional tensions. It remains to be seen if either government will officially comment further on the alleged cyberattack.
KPT is expected to monitor its recovered X account closely for any lingering unauthorized activity and may take additional security measures to prevent future incidents. The port authority will likely use the platform to provide any further updates regarding the hacking and its operational status.
