The Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project in Karachi could take up to one and a half years to complete, Provincial Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said on Sunday, citing ongoing challenges affecting the scheme.
Speaking to the media, Memon stated that the government has instructed authorities to finish the project’s side roads before Eid and is working to clear the University Road corridor as soon as possible. He added that construction work on University Road and Jinnah Avenue is expected to conclude within two to three months.
Memon acknowledged that multiple obstacles had slowed the Red Line project, at one point putting it at risk of suspension. Despite these challenges, the Sindh government has decided to continue and complete the initiative.
The minister also highlighted broader urban development in Karachi, noting that work is underway across the city to resolve issues affecting transport and infrastructure. Additionally, he announced that construction on Shahrah-e-Bhutto, connecting to the M-9 motorway, will begin by late March or early April.
On the issue of imported buses, Memon said customs authorities have held new vehicles at Karachi Port for over two months. He alleged that Punjab was charged a one percent duty while Sindh was asked to pay 17 to 18 percent. The provincial government has reportedly written to the Federal Board of Revenue seeking uniform treatment for all provinces.
