KMC Announces Citywide Road Repair Drive Across Karachi

Published by

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced a citywide plan to repair and rehabilitate roads across Karachi, aiming to improve traffic flow and basic municipal services. The initiative will cover roads in all districts, with work expected to begin soon after tenders are issued.

The decision was taken at a meeting of KMC’s Engineering Department, chaired by Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab. Officials reviewed ongoing infrastructure conditions and agreed on timelines to accelerate long-pending development work.

According to a statement issued after the meeting, KMC will rehabilitate roads under its direct control and also take up work on 183 additional roads across the city. Authorities said the aim is to ease congestion and improve connectivity, particularly on busy routes used daily by commuters.

Priority will be given to major and high-traffic roads, while efforts will be made to keep alternative routes open to minimize disruption. The mayor directed departments to finalize all schemes on an urgent basis and issue tenders before Eid so that work can start without delay.

Mayor Wahab also stressed the need for consistent progress once projects begin, instructing departments to ensure work continues according to plan and scope. “There should be no unnecessary slowdown once execution starts,” the statement quoted.

As part of the rehabilitation drive, Jahangir Road will be converted to a solar-powered street lighting system, reflecting a shift towards more energy-efficient solutions. The mayor also directed officials to improve the overall management of street lighting alongside road repairs to ensure safer travel, especially at night.

Municipal Commissioner Samira Hussain briefed the meeting on the selection of roads in different districts and shared updates on preparedness at the departmental level.
