KP Govt Approves BRT Extension to Jamrud and Bara
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has accelerated plans to extend the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service to Jamrud and Bara as Chief Minister Mohammad Sohail Afridi directed authorities to complete all preparatory work at the earliest. The expansion aims to improve connectivity between Peshawar and Khyber district, offering commuters a safer, affordable, and reliable transport option.
Chairing a high-level meeting, the chief minister said the new BRT routes would ease daily travel for thousands of residents while helping reduce traffic congestion and environmental pollution. The move is part of the province’s broader push to strengthen public transport and promote sustainable urban mobility.
Officials briefed the meeting that a dedicated BRT ramp at Karkhano station will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 500 million. To operate the new routes, the transport department will procure 12 new 12-meter buses. Authorities also plan to establish eight bus stops along a five-kilometer stretch from Karkhano Market to Jamrud Bazaar and 10 stops along a seven-kilometer section from Pishtakhara to Bara Bazaar.
A senior official stated,
The extension will integrate Khyber district into the existing BRT network, making public transport more accessible for border-area communities.
The existing BRT system currently operates 18 routes covering 132 kilometers. To further strengthen the fleet, the province plans to add 52 diesel-hybrid buses costing Rs. 3.2 billion and 50 electric buses costing Rs. 6.2 billion by June 2026, reflecting KP’s shift toward cleaner transport solutions.
