The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has imposed a ban on the use of high beam lights on vehicles in an effort to reduce road accidents and improve public safety on busy roads in Peshawar.
Officials said the decision was taken after a surge in complaints from motorists and traffic authorities about the dangers posed by intense, modified, and laser headlights.
An official notification described high-intensity lights as hazardous, warning that they can temporarily blind oncoming drivers and significantly increase the risk of collisions.
Authorities clarified that the ban is not limited to the use of such lights but also covers their sale and purchase within the provincial capital.
Traffic accident data and field reports, officials said, have shown a clear connection between the misuse of high beams and road crashes, especially on urban roads and highways after dark.
Many drivers install non-standard or modified lights to improve visibility, often without realizing the risk they pose to other road users. Under the new directive, strict legal action will be taken against violators.
Officials warned that anyone found using, selling, or trading banned vehicle lights will be prosecuted under Section 188 of the law, which deals with disobedience of official orders.
