Kp Police Enforces Social Media Ban Across All Ranks

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Police have enforced a strict social media ban across all ranks following repeated violations of the official Social Media Policy. On April 8, 2025, the Additional Inspector General of Police issued a formal directive, asking officers to ensure full compliance and submit detailed reports on enforcement.

The directive, referenced as Memo No. 307-10/CPO/IAB (a copy of which is available with TechJuice), orders all regional, district, and unit heads to monitor and control the online activities of police personnel. Despite multiple instructions issued since 2021, many officers continue to use social media and WhatsApp groups in violation of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

The department has now directed all District Police Officers and Unit Heads to establish Social Media Monitoring Units. These units must track officers’ online behavior and immediately take legal or departmental action against violators. The authorities also instructed officers to close all unauthorized social media and WhatsApp groups and submit compliance certificates.

The KP Police social media ban aims to prevent security risks and safeguard the department’s integrity. Officials warned that violations not only damage the department’s image but also endanger personnel.

Authorities also observed that media representatives had gained unauthorized access to record accused persons’ statements, despite previous instructions to halt the practice. The judiciary raised serious concerns, prompting renewed efforts to clamp down on such incidents.

The competent authority has asked all police offices to submit a comprehensive report within a week. This report must detail the actions taken to implement the KP police social media ban and list any measures against officers involved in unauthorized digital activities.
