Kuwait has agreed to assist Pakistan in the development of strategic petroleum storage facilities as both countries move to deepen cooperation in the energy sector.
The understanding was reached during a meeting in Islamabad between Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik and Kuwait’s Ambassador to Pakistan Nassar Abdulrahman Jasser Almutairi, according to an official statement from the Petroleum Division.
Both sides discussed expanding collaboration in petroleum infrastructure, particularly in refining capacity and fuel storage systems, with a focus on long-term energy security and mutual economic benefit.
The meeting also reviewed regional energy challenges, including disruptions caused by tensions in the Middle East and the temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route.
Officials noted that the Strait historically handles a significant share of global oil and gas shipments, and any disruption has direct implications for energy-importing countries like Pakistan.
During the meeting, the petroleum minister thanked Kuwait for its support during the recent regional supply disruption, including the facilitation of the vessel Khairpur, which delivered around 45,000 tonnes of diesel and 10,000 tonnes of jet fuel to Pakistan.
Pakistan currently imports more than 60 percent of its diesel requirements from Kuwait under a long-term agreement between Kuwait Petroleum Corporation and Pakistan State Oil, making Kuwait one of Islamabad’s key energy partners.
Earlier this year, Kuwait also extended its oil credit facility for Pakistan for another two years and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring stable fuel supplies despite regional shipping disruptions.
The Kuwaiti ambassador appreciated Pakistan’s efforts toward regional stability and said Islamabad’s diplomatic role during recent tensions had strengthened its international standing.
Both sides agreed to continue exploring new energy infrastructure projects, including storage facilities that could improve Pakistan’s fuel security and reduce vulnerability to global supply shocks.
