Over 82,000 rickshaws, ride-hailing cabs and public transport vehicles in Lahore have been fitted with QR panic buttons, while more than 22,000 men and women have scanned the codes so far.
According to City Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi, installing the QR panic button has been made mandatory to ensure citizen safety and bring public transport within the legal framework. Women facing harassment can scan the code to contact authorities and receive immediate assistance.
The CTO said traffic teams are affixing the buttons at 45 locations across the city. Teams have been deployed in every traffic sector, and 12 separate teams have been assigned exclusively to rickshaws. Four new licensing centres have also been established at the request of rickshaw unions.
He said smart traffic management and modern security features are being promoted. Installing advanced tracking systems in online cab services has made monitoring of passengers and drivers more effective.
Shirazi stated that a final decision has been made to take action against online cab services that fail to adopt the required safety and security features.
He added that the use of modern technology is providing citizens with safe, reliable and quality travel facilities, while technology-based measures are improving traffic discipline and public safety.
