Lahore High Court Orders Installation Of Ev Charging Stations To Combat Smog

Lahore: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed authorities to ensure the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at all fuel stations as part of efforts to combat smog in the region. The decision was made during a hearing on environmental pollution, presided over by Justice Shahid Karim.

Justice Karim declared a water emergency after becoming dissatisfied with the ineffective approaches to smog control and water management.  He subsequently directed that the city install water meter systems.  LDA was directed to offer eco-building tax relief options that would encourage sustainable urban development efforts.

The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) was ordered to restore canal water and provide an official report detailing their progress.  The LDA and Defence Housing Authority (DHA) received official directives from authorities to establish Miyawaki forests at least once every sector in order to increase tree cover and combat air pollution.

As part of his verdict, the court determined that drivers should be given incentives to switch their petrol-powered rickshaws to electric vehicles, resulting in decreased pollutant emissions from public transport networks.  Justice Karim criticised WASA management’s poor performance by focussing on their refusal to install water meters despite prior rulings.

The court directed authorities to establish parking facilities through public-private partnerships in order to alleviate urban congestion and improve parking control.  The smog-related petitions will be considered at hearings on March 21.

During the last hearing on February 28, the LHC urged the appropriate authorities to expedite the process of distributing health allowances to traffic wardens in recognition of their efforts in ensuring effective traffic operations.  The traffic warden service organisation requires due attention, thus the court emphasised the importance of better functioning infrastructure and improved facilities.

The LHC’s latest directives reflect its firm stance on environmental sustainability, urban planning, and public welfare as the city grapples with increasing pollution levels and related health concerns.
