Lahore Police have finalized key recommendations for launching a modern E-Tag system for vehicles and forwarded the proposal to the Home Department. The move aims to strengthen urban security, curb vehicle-related crime, and improve traffic monitoring by making complete vehicle data available online.
According to the proposal, the E-Tag will be an electronic chip embedded in vehicle number plates. This chip will store verified vehicle information and allow instant identification through digital scanners. Officials say the system will help authorities quickly trace stolen vehicles, stop the use of fake number plates, and identify unregistered cars operating on city roads.
Lahore has seen a steady rise in traffic volume and vehicle-related crimes, making manual checks increasingly ineffective. Law enforcement officials believe digitizing vehicle records through E-Tags will close loopholes exploited by criminals and bring the city in line with modern smart-policing practices already adopted in major global cities.
A senior police official stated,
The E-Tag system will allow real-time monitoring of vehicles entering and exiting Lahore, helping us respond faster to security threats and traffic violations. Once implemented, the system will support coordinated action against suspicious vehicles and enhance overall road safety.
If approved by the Home Department, the E-Tag project could mark a major step toward technology-driven policing in Punjab’s capital.
