Lahore Token Tax and Traffic Fines Set to Rise in New Proposal

To tackle worsening traffic congestion and frequent violations, Lahore’s traffic authorities have proposed a significant rise in traffic fines and vehicle taxation. The proposed measures include a sharp increase in penalties for luxury and commercial vehicles, alongside a 100% hike in the annual Lahore token tax for private cars.

Under the new recommendations, fines for high-end vehicles could surge from Rs300–500 to Rs1,500–2,500, while public transport and commercial vehicles might see penalties rise from Rs500–1,000 to Rs1,500–3,000. The increase in annual vehicle tax in Lahore aims to encourage a shift towards public transportation, ultimately reducing the number of private vehicles on the roads.

Authorities believe that stricter financial penalties will promote road discipline and ease Lahore’s growing traffic crisis. Additionally, the proposal emphasizes improved collaboration between government agencies to streamline the fine collection and tax payment process.

After receiving approval from the Inspector General (IG) Punjab, Lahore’s Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) has forwarded the recommendations to the court for review. If implemented, this move could reshape the city’s traffic management strategy, reinforcing the importance of compliance and sustainable urban mobility.
