Argentina football star Lionel Messi met US President Donald Trump at the White House alongside his Inter Miami teammates after their club won the Major League Soccer championship in December.
The president congratulated the club for winning the biggest football competition in US, the Major League Soccer championship, for the first time during a meeting with players at the residence.
This meeting took place in Washington before Inter Miami were due to play DC United in a Major League Soccer match scheduled later the same day in the capital city.
While speaking to media during the event, Trump celebrated the success of the club and also shared updates about ongoing United States and Israeli attacks taking place in Iran at the time.
He described the bombing in Iran and referred to reports that hundreds of children had been killed in recent days during the attacks taking place there in the country recently.
During the remarks, Messi, Luis Suarez and other Inter Miami players were seen applauding comments, a response that appeared unusual and controversial during the White House event in Washington.
One social media user while sharing some pictures of Messi with Netanyahu and wrote that Messi has ties to Zionism.
Some users shared videos of innocent schoolgirls killed in Iran, questioning why applause is being given for the killing of these children.
One user asked why Inter Miami players were applauding Trump’s speech about Iran when many civilians, including children, are reported killed, and questioned why Messi did not understand the situation.
