Metas First Urdu Ai Model Alif Officially Goes Live

Meta on Monday launched its first Urdu Large Language Model (LLM) in Pakistan, marking a significant advancement in artificial intelligence and language inclusion. The new model aims to enhance Urdu language representation in AI, empowering millions of Urdu-speaking users, developers, and innovators.

The launch took place during the “Future in Focus: AI and Innovation” event, hosted in collaboration with the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication (MoITT). Alongside the Urdu AI launch, Meta also announced experimental programs focused on AI education and digital transformation in Pakistan.

The initiatives aim to accelerate the country’s digital progress and make AI tools more accessible to local users. With the Meta AI Urdu rollout, Pakistani users can now interact with the platform in both English and Urdu, expanding access to AI-powered technology for millions.

Meta Showcases Localized Llama Guide

During the event, Meta also unveiled the localized edition of its whitepaper, “Transforming Public Sector Innovation in Asia Pacific with Llama,” developed with Deloitte. The guide explains how Meta’s open-source AI model, Llama, can enhance governance, improve public services, and strengthen data sovereignty. It highlights successful AI integration case studies across the Asia-Pacific region, including Pakistan.

In partnership with the Higher Education Commission (HEC), National Computing Education Accreditation Council (NCEAC), MoITT, and atomcamp, Meta launched the AI Literacy Program, designed to train 350 non-computer science university faculty members in AI fundamentals. The goal is to equip educators with the skills needed to prepare students for a tech-driven future.

Additionally, the Government Digital Transformation Xperience (GDTX) 2025 initiative was introduced to help Pakistan’s public institutions leverage Meta’s technologies, tools, and best practices. The program will connect experts from the public and private sectors to share strategies and experiences in driving digital innovation.

IT Minister Lauds Launch of Meta AI Urdu

Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima said that the initiative aligns with Pakistan’s growing focus on AI innovation and digital transformation. By supporting Urdu language integration into AI systems, Meta promotes local language empowerment and ensures broader participation in the global digital economy, she added.

The minister emphasized Pakistan’s strategic vision for a digitally empowered and innovation-driven future. She further underscored the government’s commitment to building a future-ready Pakistan through advancements in AI and digital skills, empowering youth and women in the technology ecosystem, strengthening AI research, education, and innovation, and promoting ethical and inclusive technology development.

Meta’s Director of Public Policy for South and Central Asia, Sarim Aziz, stated that Meta aims to support digital transformation through effective use of AI in the public and education sectors. He expressed excitement about Meta AI Urdu, noting that it will enable local communities to engage with technology in their native language, strengthening Pakistan’s digital ecosystem.
