Meta has been selling millions of smart glasses, but it has had a blind spot: the billions of people who actually need glasses to see. That changes now.
The company announced on Tuesday two new Ray-Ban Meta styles, Blayzer Optics and Scriber Optics, that are designed specifically for prescription wearers.
As explained by Meta:
Today, we’re rolling out an optical-forward pair of Ray-Ban Meta glasses that support nearly all prescriptions. These are also the most comfortable glasses we’ve ever designed — aimed to better support all-day wear, even if you don’t need a prescription. Ergonomic features such as overextension hinges, interchangeable nose-pads, and optician-adjustable temple tips help make these new Ray-Ban Meta styles adaptable to individual face shapes for a tailored fit.
While previous Ray-Ban Meta glasses technically supported prescription lenses, the frames were never optimized for people who rely on corrective eyewear all day. The new models are built around that use case from the start, with slimmer profiles, flexible overextension hinges, interchangeable nose pads, and temple tips that an optician can adjust to fit individual face shapes.
Blayzer has a rectangular design reminiscent of the classic Wayfarer look and comes in standard and large sizes. Scriber takes a rounder, slimmer approach. Both are available in Matte Black, Transparent Black, and Transparent Dark Olive, along with seasonal colors. Prescription lens options include standard, thin, and extra-thin with anti-reflective treatments. Meta says the glasses support nearly all prescription types.
Pre-orders open today in the U.S. starting at $499, with availability at optical retailers beginning April 14 in the U.S. and select international markets.
Meta’s smart glasses business has been one of its few unqualified hardware successes. The company says sales have more than tripled year over year, with millions of units sold through its partnership with EssilorLuxottica. Global smart glasses shipments reached 9.6 million units last year, with Meta accounting for roughly 76% of that total, and industry projections put 2026 shipments at 13.4 million units. But a huge portion of the global population, billions of people, wears corrective lenses daily. Reaching those customers requires glasses they can actually wear as their primary pair, not a second gadget they swap in occasionally.
Alongside the hardware, Meta is rolling out a wave of new software features. Hands-free nutrition tracking lets users log meals by voice or photo, with Meta AI extracting nutritional details and adding them to a food log that powers personalized dietary insights over time. WhatsApp summaries and recall by Meta AI are coming to the glasses, and users will soon be able to scroll through Instagram Reels directly in the lens. Neural Handwriting, which lets users reply to messages by writing with a finger on any surface, is expanding to iMessage in addition to Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. Pedestrian navigation is also expanding to every U.S. city in May.
However, the push to make AI glasses an all-day product does carry baggage. Meta is already under investigation in both the U.S. and U.K. over its human review process for footage captured through its smart glasses. Reports have revealed that Meta contractors have viewed extremely personal content recorded by wearers, including intimate moments.
As the glasses become something people wear from morning to night, the volume of sensitive footage flowing through Meta’s systems will only increase. Workplace confidentiality concerns and questions about recording consent in public spaces remain unresolved, and regulatory bodies have not yet caught up to the pace of Meta’s product releases.
None of that appears to be slowing the company down. Meta is betting that once people experience the convenience of an AI assistant built into their everyday glasses, the utility will outweigh the privacy discomfort.
“People all over the world have already discovered the power of AI glasses,” Meta said. “We’ve sold millions of units across our full collection in partnership with EssilorLuxottica, with sales more than tripling year over year. Now, we’re focused on building the deepest lineup of AI glasses across every use case, whether you’re training outdoors or just going about your day.”
Meta is also rolling out new nutrition tracking tools, along with WhatsApp summary and recall features. Plus, you’ll be able to scroll through Instagram Reels directly from the glasses. Moreover, there are in-lens games and expanded Spotify options to match your music to your activities.
