The Ministry of IT and Telecommunications (MoITT) has officially initiated the process to withdraw the Pakistan Telecom (Re-organization) Amendment Bill 2026 from the Senate. The 90-day stipulated period for the bill’s Senate approval was nearing its completion.
Upon the expiry of the 90-day window, legislative rules mandate that the bill must proceed to a joint sitting of Parliament. However, MoITT indicated that the convening of a joint sitting might not occur anytime in the near future.
Consequently, waiting for this joint session would indefinitely stall the legislation. Therefore, the ministry took proactive steps to withdraw the current draft to avoid a deadlock.
To completely bypass these procedural delays, MoITT has decided to introduce a fresh telecom bill. This strategic move specifically aims to expedite the legislation and ensure the process continues in a timely and effective manner.
Furthermore, the ministry confirmed that the new bill will retain the exact essence of the originally proposed legislation. The core focus and objectives remain completely intact despite the procedural reset.
