ISLAMABAD: The investigation into the social media activity of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has taken a new turn. A team from the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), led by Additional Director Ayaz Khan, questioned him inside Adiala Jail.
According to sources, Imran Khan avoided giving direct answers during the session and repeatedly asked the investigators to leave. He accused the NCCIA official of framing him in a false case.
Who controls the account?
When asked about the ownership of the account, the PTI founder declined to share details. He reportedly said naming anyone could put that person at risk of abduction. He stressed that he does not use any special messenger and that occasional messages are passed to his media team through visitors.
Are foreign agencies involved?
Investigators asked whether the account was being run by foreign agencies like the CIA, RAW, or Mossad. Khan allegedly responded that Jibran Ilyas was more patriotic than many others and hinted that investigators already knew the answer. He denied having any connection to Jibran Ilyas or his account.
Imran Khan was also questioned about why the PTI leadership often distances itself from his social media posts. He reportedly said party leaders are afraid of consequences and prefer to avoid responsibility. He clarified that his sister Aleema Khan has no political role.
Are political accounts in Pakistan compromised?
This case adds to a larger debate about the independence of political accounts in Pakistan. In the past, several political figures have faced similar accusations. A recent leak has exposed India’s alleged digital strategies to shape the global narrative on Kashmir. The document, attributed to hacktivists, details instructions from India’s Permanent Mission in Geneva.
Back in 2025, the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) summoned 10 PTI social media activists. They were accused of fueling unrest through negative online propaganda. The question now is whether these accounts are truly compromised or if such claims are part of wider political narratives.
For now, the allegations remain unverified, and the broader issue lingers: are social media platforms of political leaders in Pakistan influenced by foreign agencies, or are these suspicions shaped by politics?
