Only 17% Aware, Yet 1.2 Million Vape: Pakistan’s Nicotine Paradox

Vaping is quietly gaining a foothold in Pakistan. A new nationwide survey by Gallup Pakistan reveals a stark contrast between public awareness and actual vape usage. The report, released yesterday, January 5, 2026, highlights growing concerns regarding youth and nicotine consumption.

Low Awareness, High Usage

Gallup Pakistan conducted this survey between September 12 and 23, 2025. They gathered responses from 1,153 adults aged 18 and above. The results show that the general public remains largely unaware of these modern nicotine products.

Only 17% of respondents knew about electronic cigarettes or vaping devices. Similarly, awareness for chewing tobacco and related products stood at just 20%. Interestingly, awareness levels skewed higher among urban residents and wealthier demographics.

However, the lack of knowledge does not mean a lack of users. The survey estimates that over 1.2 million people in Pakistan currently use vaping devices.

Metric Data / Findings
Survey Period Sept 12 – 23, 2025
Sample Size 1,153 Adults (18+)
Vaping Awareness 17%
Estimated Users 1.2 Million+

Risk Perception of Vape

Public opinion on the safety of these devices is clear. Most respondents view vaping as harmful. In fact, many consider it just as dangerous as conventional cigarettes. Furthermore, a majority of those familiar with vaping believe that second-hand vapour, exhaled by vapers, negatively affects people nearby.

Social circles reflect the low awareness levels. Among the respondents who were familiar with vaping, 60% stated that neither they nor anyone they knew used these products. Only a small fraction reported personal or indirect use.

Youth at the Centre of Concern

The survey identifies young people as the primary demographic for these products. Respondents overwhelmingly named the youth as the group most affected by smoking, vaping, and chewing tobacco.

Why does the younger generation vape? The survey cites two main drivers:

  • Fashion Trends: Vaping is seen as a style statement.
  • Experimentation: Curiosity drives initial usage.

Additionally, respondents expressed significant concern regarding flavoured chewing tobacco. Many believe these specific products are designed to attract younger users, further cementing the link between nicotine products and the youth.
