OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently admitted that the personality of ChatGPT 4.0 has become “sycophant-y and annoying” following recent updates. While he acknowledges that the update has brought some “very good parts,” Altman assures users that the company is addressing the issue. He promised that a fix would be rolled out through updates this week to refine the model’s personality.
“The last couple of GPT-4.0 updates have made the personality too sycophant-y and annoying (even though there are some very good parts of it), and we are working on fixes asap, some today and some this week,” Altman wrote on X. “At some point will share our learnings from this, it’s been interesting,” he added.
User Feedback Sparks Change
The personality shift in ChatGPT 4.0 has drawn attention from users, especially after an update aimed at enhancing both its intelligence and personality. Shortly after the update, users took to social media to express concerns about the model’s behavior. One user commented, “It’s been feeling very yes-man-like lately. Would like to see that change in future updates.” Altman responded promptly, writing, “yeah it glazes too much. will fix.”
Some users even highlighted that the AI’s responses had become overly obsequious, complaining about how “nice” it had become. These observations have prompted OpenAI to take action and refine the model further.
A Glimpse of What’s to Come
In response to queries about future customization, Altman teased that users would eventually be able to choose from a variety of AI personalities. He hinted at multiple personality options becoming available in the future, saying, “yeah eventually we clearly need to be able to offer multiple options.” This could mean that, in future iterations, users may have the ability to select the tone or personality they prefer from the ChatGPT models.
ChatGPT 4.0
Launched in May 2024, the ChatGPT 4.0 model has been a major upgrade from its predecessors. Promised to be 2x faster, 50% cheaper, and with 5x higher rate limits compared to GPT-4 Turbo, ChatGPT 4.0 also introduced impressive features like solving complex math equations, interpreting facial expressions, and real-time spoken language translation. Additionally, it can now handle both text and audio natively, and with the addition of an image generator last month, it can also generate images.
The multimodal capabilities of ChatGPT 4.0 are one of its standout features, allowing for more natural and diverse interactions. However, as the company works to improve the model’s personality, users can expect further updates that will fine-tune the user experience.
As OpenAI continues to improve ChatGPT, users are eagerly awaiting the fixes that will address the “too nice” and sycophantic personality traits.
