OpenAI to Buy Chrome? AI Giant Shows Interest Amid Google Antitrust Shake-Up

OpenAI may be preparing to enter the browser market. The company recently expressed interest in acquiring Google Chrome if it becomes available due to the ongoing antitrust trial.

During a hearing in the remedy phase of the DOJ vs. Google case, OpenAI’s Head of ChatGPT, Nick Turley, confirmed the company’s willingness to buy the browser. This came after the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) proposed that Google divest Chrome to break its monopoly in search and digital ads.

The Justice Department accuses Google of abusing its market power to block competition. The agency pointed to Google’s deals with Apple and Mozilla to keep it as the default search engine on their platforms.

Last year, the court ruled that Google violated antitrust laws. Now, the focus is on potential solutions, including forcing Google to sell off parts of its business. Chrome, Android, and other products are under scrutiny.

OpenAI’s “AI-First” Vision for Chrome

Turley told the court that OpenAI could take a new direction with Chrome. The company plans to adopt an “AI-first” approach to reshape the browsing experience. OpenAI recently launched its SearchGPT feature, which functions like a search engine and shows its interest in search-related technologies.

He also said other companies want to buy Chrome without revealing any names.

OpenAI’s interest in Chrome comes at a time when the browser’s future hangs in the balance. If the DOJ succeeds, Google may have to let go of its most widely used browser.

Analysts believe that a sale could significantly shift the tech landscape. With OpenAI’s track record in AI and innovation, the move could challenge Google’s dominance in new ways.

What’s Next in the Google Antitrust Case?

The Google antitrust case is the biggest of its kind in over two decades. The DOJ continues to argue that Google’s dominance has harmed competition and innovation.

With the OpenAI to buy Chrome narrative gaining traction, the industry is watching closely. A potential sale could change how billions of users access the web. Whether OpenAI will lead that change is a question only time, and the courts, will answer.
