Opera has announced a new cryptocurrency oriented web browser

Opera is now ready for Web 3.0 which will be decentralized based on peer-to-peer networks rather than the traditional server networks we have nowadays. The company announced the new version of their browser at Hard Fork Decentralized where they detailed different features which make use of blockchain to make Opera Web 3.0 compatible.

Speaking on the occasion, Opera Executive VP Krystian Kolondra said:

Our hope is that this step will accelerate the transition of cryptocurrencies from speculation and investment to being used for actual payments and transactions in our users’ daily lives.

The browser features a built-in crypto-currency wallet as well as access to a seamless number of blockchain services that Opera hopes will increase adoption of cryptocurrencies. The browser enables users to set up their digital identity, use decentralized applications and make transactions.

For starters, Ethereum will be supported on this browser whereas support for other currencies is expected to roll out soon. Opera has opted for Ethereum first as they consider it to have the biggest developer base and wide community. According to Charles Hamel, product lead for Opera:

One major hurdle in all this is that you need a special browser or special browser extensions to even start exploring the decentralized web and even then, users are faced with lots of new terminologies that is sometimes confusing. That’s why we made our browser super user-friendly.

What are your thoughts regarding this new browser from Opera? Do you think they are headed in the right direction?
