Pakistan Airports Authority Begins Using Electric Vehicles for Airport Operations

Published by

Pakistan’s aviation sector has taken a modest but visible step toward cleaner operations as the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has begun introducing electric vehicles into its airport service fleet.

The move came into public view after a BYD-branded electric vehicle, carrying a yellow-and-black checkered design, was seen operating within an airport premises. While the authority has not yet issued a formal announcement outlining the scale of deployment, the appearance of the vehicle suggests a gradual shift toward low-emission transport for airport ground operations.

Cutting Airport Emissions

According to officials familiar with airport planning, the introduction of electric vehicles is part of broader efforts to reduce emissions generated by ground support activities, including staff movement and operational transport. Airport operations rely heavily on service vehicles, making them a key area for emission reduction initiatives.

The step also reflects a wider modernization drive within airport support services, where efficiency, sustainability, and lower operating costs are increasingly being prioritized.

Alongside the introduction of electric vehicles, the PAA has taken parallel steps to prepare infrastructure for future demand. An auction notice issued by the authority recently offered lease rights for the establishment and operation of a petrol pump and an electric vehicle charging station at Islamabad International Airport.

The inclusion of EV charging facilities alongside conventional fuel services indicates that airport planners are preparing for a mixed-fuel environment as electric mobility expands in Pakistan.

BYD Expands Presence in Pakistan

Separately, BYD is expected to strengthen its position in Pakistan’s growing electric vehicle market. The company is reportedly preparing to introduce two additional electric vehicle models locally, with launches anticipated before the end of January. These additions are expected to broaden options for consumers as interest in electric mobility continues to rise.

While still at an early stage, the PAA’s adoption of electric vehicles signals a cautious but meaningful shift toward greener airport operations in the country.
