Significant developments are underway to strengthen ties between Pakistan and Bangladesh. Bangladesh High Commissioner Iqbal Hussain Khan has announced that “Mahan Air” is likely to commence three weekly flights between Karachi and Dhaka. Scheduled to start next month (December 2025), this initiative marks a major step toward improved connectivity and trade promotion.
Speaking at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI), the High Commissioner revealed a streamlined visa process. Authorities are now issuing visas to LCCI members within three to four days. This fast-track system operates on the joint recommendation of the LCCI and the Bangladesh Honorary Consulate in Lahore. Consequently, travel for businessmen will become faster and easier.
Furthermore, the envoy highlighted specific trade exchanges. He proposed that Pakistan could export rice to Bangladesh, while Bangladesh could supply fresh pineapples. Both nations also see significant potential in textiles and readymade garments. LCCI President Faheemur Rehman Saigol specifically emphasised seeking guidance from Bangladesh in the garments sector.
Currently, bilateral trade stands at approximately $700 million. However, officials believe there is potential to increase this volume to $3 billion over the next few years. To support this demand, a dedicated direct cargo shipping service will launch soon. This new route will supplement the cargo service that has been operational since December 2024.
Additionally, President Saigol noted opportunities for collaboration in other high-growth industries, including IT and automobiles. He confirmed that an LCCI delegation will visit Dhaka soon to further these efforts.
Beyond commerce, Pakistan and Bangladesh are fostering educational ties. The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan will soon send a delegation representing 12 universities to Bangladesh. Their goal is to attract more Bangladeshi students to study in Pakistan. Moreover, the High Commissioner Iqbal Hussain identified Pakistan’s tourism sector as an area with considerable potential, citing the shared history, culture, and values that unite the two communities.
