Pakistan recently rose to 7th place globally among comparable telecom markets. This significant milestone came after the country successfully concluded its International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) 5G spectrum auction on March 10, 2026. Consequently, the government generated approximately $507 million in revenue. Furthermore, this crucial milestone sets the stage for a nationwide 5G rollout under the Digital Nation Pakistan vision.
A Massive Boost for National Telecom Capacity
Previously, Pakistan ranked 14th in total spectrum availability. However, the latest auction added 480 MHz of new spectrum. As a result, the country’s total assigned IMT capacity surged from nearly 274 MHz to roughly 754 MHz.
This expansion directly pushes Pakistan ahead of several developing economies. For instance, Pakistan now surpasses Indonesia, Egypt, Turkey, Thailand, and Bangladesh in total spectrum availability.
Despite this incredible progress, advanced digital economies still maintain a clear lead. Japan and Saudi Arabia have assigned over 1.3 GHz of IMT spectrum. Similarly, China, Brazil, and the Philippines remain ahead of Pakistan. Nevertheless, the recent auction successfully narrowed this gap. It places Pakistan within the upper tier of emerging telecom markets.
How Telecom Operators Dominated the 5G Spectrum Auction
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) supervised the auction through a transparent and internationally recognized mechanism. Additionally, NERA Economic Consulting provided international consultancy support.
The auction offered spectrum across the 700, 2300, 2600, and 3500 MHz bands. Ultimately, buyers acquired over 80% of the offered spectrum. Investors bought all available spectrum in the 2300 and 2600 MHz bands. Meanwhile, the 3500 MHz band saw strong demand, indicating serious industry commitment to launching 5G services.
Three major mobile operators acquired spectrum to strengthen their next-generation networks.
| Mobile Operator | Spectrum Acquired | Primary Focus Area |
|---|---|---|
| Jazz | 190 MHz (Multiple bands) | Maintaining nationwide coverage and capacity. |
| Ufone | 180 MHz | High-capacity 5G and fixed wireless access (Strong position in 3500 MHz). |
| Zong | 110 MHz | Enhancing broadband performance via mid-band spectrum. |
Paving the Way for Digital Nation Pakistan
This additional spectrum will drastically improve network quality. Moreover, it will enable faster internet speeds across Pakistan. Consequently, the upgraded infrastructure will support rapid growth in digital services, artificial intelligence, fintech, and e-commerce.
Overall, Pakistan’s telecom sector is now better equipped to launch 5G services and drive long-term digital economic growth. However, the IT Ministry notes that the country will require further spectrum releases to fully match the levels seen in leading digital economies.
