Pakistan Now Connected with World’s Largest Optical Fiber Cable: IT Minister

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has achieved a significant milestone in its digital infrastructure by connecting to the world’s largest optical fiber cable, a move that promises to transform the nation’s internet connectivity.

“The connection of Pakistan to the world’s largest optical fiber cable marks a major step forward in enhancing our digital infrastructure. This will provide our citizens with faster, more reliable internet, and pave the way for future advancements in technology,” Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima said at a recent event.

The minister emphasized that the new optical fiber connection will bolster Pakistan’s telecom sector, which is already undergoing rapid expansion, including efforts to improve regional connectivity. “We are also working on connecting Pakistan to Central Asia through the Wakhan border to strengthen our position as a regional leader in digital trade and connectivity,” she added.

In addition to the optical fiber expansion, the minister confirmed PTA chief’s comments that Pakistan is preparing to offer 5G spectrum by May or June 2025. “The launch of 5G in Pakistan will drive economic growth, significantly enhance GDP, and allow the country to compete globally in the tech sector,” Shaza Fatima said. She further highlighted the government’s goal of increasing IT exports from $3.2 billion to $15 billion in line with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision of a $25 billion digital economy.

Shaza Fatima also noted that the government is carefully evaluating investment requirements for the 5G rollout. “We are looking at global best practices to ensure a smooth transition to 5G and to secure Pakistan’s position as a leader in digital connectivity,” she said.
