Pakistan is currently planning a mandatory work-from-home policy. The government wants to enforce strict fuel conservation measures across the country. Currently, in the ongoing Middle East war, Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz by threatening control over it. Consequently, this closure disrupts regional trade flows and triggers massive uncertainty in global oil markets.
This work-from-home initiative is a part of the emergency measures taken by Pakistan to keep its markets liquid in this state of crisis.
Today, more than a fifth of global oil cargoes face delays in the strait. Therefore, vessel availability is rapidly tightening, and global freight costs are surging. Furthermore, Pakistan’s long-term diesel shipments, specifically from Kuwait, remain heavily exposed to these blocked Gulf shipping routes.
A cabinet committee is actively discussing a national action plan to manage these disruptions. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb chairs this committee. To guarantee nationwide coordination, the government explicitly directed provincial chief secretaries to attend all upcoming deliberations. Additionally, policymakers are exploring alternative sourcing routes through the Red Sea and the wider Gulf region.
Authorities confirm that Pakistan faces no immediate fuel shortage. In fact, the country currently holds nearly four weeks of petrol and diesel reserves. Moreover, officials noted that long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) contracts remain intact. However, prolonged maritime disruptions could eventually impact global logistics.
Meanwhile, the government urgently wants to curb unnecessary consumption. Accordingly, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) took decisive action. OGRA now allows oil marketing companies to temporarily regulate retail supplies. Companies will base these supplies on historical sales patterns. Ultimately, this move prevents stockpiling and protects the market during price volatility. Authorities urge consumers to avoid panic buying while they finalize these critical conservation efforts.
