Pakistan Digital Transformation Poised to Deliver $20bn in Economic Impact

The federal government expects Pakistan digital transformation efforts to generate an economic impact of $20 billion within the next four years, supported by major reforms and fast growing telecom and IT infrastructure.

During the 26th South Asian Telecommunication Regulators Council meeting in Islamabad, Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja said the government is working to develop a strong digital foundation that supports national progress and strengthens regional cooperation. She noted that the event comes at a pivotal time as countries adopt emerging technologies and said Pakistan is advancing according to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s “Digital Nation” vision. Broadband expansion, digital inclusion, and regulatory reforms remain key focus areas aimed at improving regional connectivity.

Shaza Fatima highlighted progress achieved under ongoing Pakistan digital transformation initiatives. She referenced the Digital Nation Bill, passed in January 2025, which laid the groundwork for Vision 2030 measures such as availability of 1000 MHz spectrum, development of a Data Exchange Layer with NADRA, and movement toward a cashless economy. She added that work on the National Fiberization Policy is underway, and federal departments along with several provinces have already waived Right of Way charges.

Telecom Growth and IT Export Momentum

Pakistan now has 200 million mobile subscribers, and the telecom sector is contributing Rs1.3 trillion to the national exchequer. IT exports have posted steady 20 percent annual growth for the past three years, supported by spectrum reforms, the planned 600 MHz auction, and the upcoming Mobile Virtual Network Operator framework. The government aims to strengthen cooperation across South Asia in telecom and IT to promote digital trade, innovation, and secure data governance.

PTA Chairman Hafeez ur Rehman reiterated that consumer protection remains a key regulatory priority. He said the Authority is committed to encouraging fair competition, high quality of service, and secure connectivity, adding that regional collaboration is essential to maintain long term digital development.
