Pakistan Engages with US Amid Immigrant Visa Freeze

Published by

Pakistan is actively engaging with the United States following the announcement of an indefinite suspension of immigrant visa processing, which includes applicants from Pakistan. The US State Department cited concerns over migrants relying on public welfare at “unacceptable rates,” effective January 21, 2026. Pakistani authorities are hopeful that routine processing will resume soon.

The suspension affects applicants from 75 countries, including Pakistan, amid a stricter review of US immigration policies. The decision comes shortly after the US canceled over 100,000 visas in an immigration crackdown, signaling a significant tightening of entry rules for foreigners. This step has raised concerns for Pakistani families and skilled workers planning to move to the United States.

Foreign Office Spokesperson Tahir Andrabi stated at a briefing in Islamabad, “We understand this is an internal ongoing review of US immigration,” highlighting Pakistan’s efforts to gather more information from US authorities. He described the situation as “evolving” and assured that Pakistan is in constant contact with US officials to resolve the issue promptly.

The suspension could affect thousands of Pakistanis awaiting immigrant visas, particularly those planning to reunite with families or work in the US. Analysts believe this reflects the US government’s growing focus on controlling public welfare expenditures and tightening immigration checks. Pakistani officials are reportedly lobbying for exceptions and a clear timeline for resuming normal visa processing
