The National Assembly of Pakistan has introduced the Copyright (Amendment) Bill, 2026, aimed at modernizing the country’s copyright framework and strengthening legal protections for creators.
The bill proposes amendments to the Copyright Ordinance, 1962 to address modern copyright challenges and improve safeguards for intellectual property rights in Pakistan. The legislation was presented in the assembly by Dr. Tariq Fazal, Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs.
After its introduction, the proposed law was referred to the relevant parliamentary committee for further examination and discussion before it proceeds in the legislative process.
Officials say the amendment aims to update outdated provisions and better regulate issues such as the re-arrangement or alteration of creative works, ensuring that creators receive stronger legal protection in today’s digital and creative economy.
The Copyright (Amendment) Bill 2026 is part of a broader legislative effort during 2026 to update existing laws in Pakistan. Other proposed measures include amendments to the National Tariff Commission framework and the Export Development Fund, reflecting wider reforms across different sectors.
In addition, similar legislative initiatives and private member bills in the Senate of Pakistan indicate an ongoing effort to modernize Pakistan’s legal system and strengthen regulatory frameworks.
