Pakistan Introduces Innovative Fishing Museum And Digital Traceability System

The government of Pakistan has taken a significant step toward modernizing the country’s fisheries sector with the launch of the first-ever Fishing Technology Museum in Karachi. Alongside this, the Mahi-Dost digital traceability app was also introduced to strengthen sustainable fishing, transparency, and export growth.

The museum showcases the evolution of fishing in Pakistan, from traditional artisanal methods to modern technologies, including AI based sonar systems and eco-friendly fishing gear. Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry emphasized that the museum is not just an exhibition but a strategic hub for research, education, and policymaking, aiming to preserve coastal communities’ cultural heritage while advancing innovation.

“By integrating indigenous knowledge with modern tools, this museum will support evidence based decision making and train future marine scientists and fisheries managers to tackle overfishing and climate challenges,” said the minister.

The Mahi-Dost app introduces a digital catch to consumer traceability system using blockchain and GPS technology, allowing fishermen to log their catches in real time. The platform ensures compliance with international standards, such as EU Catch Certification, the US Marine Mammal Protection Act, and Indian Ocean Tuna Commission regulations.

Pilot projects have already shortened approval timelines for EU exports, opened access to premium markets, and encouraged dolphin-safe fishing practices, potentially enhancing Pakistan’s seafood exports, currently valued at around $500 million.

The combined impact of the museum and Mahi-Dost app is expected to improve monitoring and control, reduce regional illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing losses estimated at $1 billion, and advance Pakistan’s Blue Economy Policy along with Sustainable Development Goal 14, focused on marine conservation.

“The government is committed to integrating innovation with heritage to ensure a resilient and sustainable future for Pakistan’s maritime sector,” the minister added.
